In Matt’s words

The couples I do my best work with

I like working with different kinds of people in different situations. I like helping people decide whether to break up or try to make it work (aka discernment counseling). I'm not scared by conflict or big feelings. I'm comfortable with hetero couples, queer people, ENM, throuples and other arrangements... I have a soft spot for hetero couples, because as a gay/queer man, I've thought a lot about gender and the different experiences of men and women.

My style in the room

Sometimes I play interpreter, helping people understand each other better. I'm nice and pleasant but also tend to be direct. I speak plainly. I normally enjoy people and like my work, and it shows. I'm on everyone's side. I have a sense of humor. I don't shy away from complexity or pain. Wherever you're coming from, I try to honor that.

Clients often tell me they appreciate…

Therapy clients have told me I'm kind, thoughtful, calm, calming, and sometimes fun. I'm invested, I care, and I'm interested. I'm curious, ask good questions, and don't judge the answers. One client told me her therapy experience was one of profound dignity. That meant a lot to me.

Outside the therapy room…

I'm from the Midwest, and I have the typical Midwest mentality that we're all in this together. Sometimes I do fun things with Jell-o, which is also very Midwestern. But at this point, I've been in Austin more than half my life. I love karaoke.

Not the right fit for
